DOO-WOP

Step into the nostalgic charm of Doo-Wop music, where harmonious melodies and heartfelt lyrics transport you to a bygone era of soulful harmonies and timeless classics.

Doo-wop, is a charming and harmonically rich genre, emerged in the 1940s and 1950s as a distinctive vocal style within the broader landscape of rhythm and blues. Characterised by its smooth, multi-part harmonies and simplistic yet infectious melodies, Doo-Wop exudes a nostalgic and timeless charm.

Originating from urban street corners and fostering a sense of camaraderie among vocal groups, Doo-Wop often centres around themes of love, romance, and youthful exuberance. With its roots deeply embedded in gospel and barbershop quartet traditions, Doo-Wop artists, such as The Platters, The Drifters, and The Penguins, achieved widespread popularity.

The genre’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to transport listeners to an era of vocal artistry, capturing the essence of both innocence and passion that defines the golden age of Doo-Wop.

Jean-Paul finds joy in singing from the Doo-Wop genre for it’s harmonious melodies and nostalgic charm, transporting listeners to a bygone era of soulful music and heartfelt harmonies.

Roy Orbison

Doo-Wop with its smooth rhythm and blues harmonies. What artists are part of the doo-wop?

Roy Orbison

Roy Orbison was a member of the travelling Wilburys with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lyne.

He had an amazing vocal range, with his three–octave voice.

Did you know that it was Roy Orison that sung ‘Pretty Woman’, famous from the romantic comedy Pretty Woman.

In 1987 Roy was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame.

And in 1998 Roy was given a Grammy for lifetime achievement award for his outstanding contributions to the recording industry.

The Platters

Formed in 1952 by Tony Williams, David Lynch, Alex Hodge, Herb Reed and Ram Rameriez.

The platters were one of the first black groups to achieve mainstream success in the states.

The platters toured extensively in Europe where they helped to break down racial barriers in the music industry.

Tom Jones

The song ‘Delilah’ was originally written for Tom’s sixties rival ‘PJ Proby’, but the writers loathed the song and gave it to Tom.

Did you know that Tom’s least favourite singer was Cliff Richard, he hated having to sing the ‘Young Ones’ at the local dance halls.

Tom’s signature hand gestures were devised as code for the band so that they could all stay in sync, have you noticed that before?  You will now!

The Drifters

Did you know The Drifters have had over 60 members since 1953!  Through the 1980’s many of The Drifters members frequently left and re-joined.

After The Drifters Atlantic career, they moved to England and only had 4 charted records in the 1970’s.

In 2004 Rolling Stone Magazine ranked the drifters at #81 on their list of the 100 greatest artists of all time.

The Skyliners

The Skyliners original group dissolved in 1963 but reunited in 1974.

The Skyliners recorded their “comeback” song in 1975 for the RCA (Radio Corporation of America) subsidiary.

The Skyliners manager and producer co-wrote “Since I don’t have you”.

" I find joy in singing from the Doo-Wop genre for its harmonious melodies and nostalgic charm "
